The Promise of Edible Insect Production

Improving health, nutrition and incomes for refugees in the Kyaka II settlement in Western Uganda

Why insect production?

Uganda hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world. One of its settlements is Kyaka II in Western Uganda, where malnutrition is widespread among both refugees and the surrounding host communities.

As the population of Kyaka II keeps growing, traditional livelihoods such as large-scale agriculture are no longer viable. Refugees need innovative, land-efficient solutions that address their challenges while building sustainability and resilience.

RefIPro responds to this by introducing insect production among refugees and host communities in the settlement – mealworms as nutritious food, and black soldier fly larvae as animal feed that can be sold to generate income.
